Stiles nods and glances around the small cafe space. The tables are occupied, but no one looks like they’re about to need a second cup, so he feels free to announce, “Just going to go get a new bag from the back,” to Kira, despite having just done that no more than thirty minutes ago.

But Scott must have also said something to Kira because she just nods with a grin, and Stiles leaves the counter before fate can intervene. Mountain Man is an enigma. Stiles had been certain, the first time he’d walked up to his counter, that he was going to be gruff and rude, like the assholes from the bank across the street that treat the small space like their personal conference room and bark out orders without any regard to the fact an actual person was taking them. He’d figured Mountain Man was there for the coffee, only to be surprised when he caught a glimpse of the man at the registers an hour later with a stack of books in his hands. His assumption that he was only getting the latest quickly read and easily digestible thrillers was shown to be wrong when Kira spotted him buying classics the next month, and then Stiles stopped assuming anything about him at all.

Except, of course, for the fact that he lives up in the mountains that surround their small little college town (the boots and beard give that away), works with his hands for a living (always calloused), is somewhere in his late thirties (laugh lines around his eyes, silver beginning to streak through his beard) and has no significant other—though that last one might just be wishful thinking.

“Stiles, could you go see if Allison can trade us for some ones?” 

He takes the twenty dollar bill from Kira and steps out from behind the counter. The store’s been dead all day, he’s pretty sure there are still a stack of ones sitting in the register. “You’re not fooling me,” he says, and she grins back at him.

“Who said I was trying to?”

Allison’s up at the front register, leaning her elbows on the counter and texting, phone in front of her face. It’s an act that would get the rest of them written up, but Allison’s clearly fine with taking advantage of the fact that her parents own the store and Stiles can’t really fault her for that. If his dad were running it he’d probably delight in kicking people out the moment they asked if someone could help them find a book with a yellow cover.

And in front of Allison, browsing the small section of puzzle books and journals, is Mountain Man.

“Hey hey, boss lady,” he says. There’s no way to angle himself to keep Mountain Man in view, but if he bends over enough he can sort of see his reflection in the poster-covered glass windows.

She sets her phone down and grins at him, snatching the bill out of his hand. “Hello yourself, coffee boy. No token of your appreciation this time?”

“Kira’s making it as we speak,” he says, and she shakes her head when he uses his in-store radio to quietly order it. “But if you could be so kind in the meantime—”

“You’re such a dork,” she says fondly, pushing a stack of dollar bills into his hand. “Go get my coffee, I’m practically asleep up here. I told Dad no one would come in today, there’s three feet of snow on the ground.”

“Maybe someone could convince him to close early,” he says, walking backwards out of the section. His gaze strays to Mountain Man and when their eyes meet, his heart starts beating double-time. He glances down at the books in his hands—a few that Stiles recognizes from the YA section, even more from the display of queer novels that Allison had set up for Valentine’s day. “Good selection,” he says, “Red, White, and Royal Blue was good,” and spins around in his haste to get back to the cafe.

Kira’s holding a cup in her hand, but pulls it back towards her when he flings himself over the counter. “What?”

He needs water. Or to plunge himself into a snowbank to cool his overheated face. “Please remind me that straight guys read gay love stories too so I don’t go do something reckless.”

“That hasn’t been my experience at all,” Kira says cheerfully, pushing him upright and handing the cup over. “Go get his name, at least.”

Mountain Man is gone by the time Stiles gets back up there.

He stashed his marker somewhere. He knows he did, he always has it to write the orders on the cups, and most of the time he puts it back in his apron pocket—except when his pockets are full of the bags of espresso beans he was supposed to restock before the swarm of banker bros took over the place. He’d taken their orders, empties his pockets, and then promptly spent the last five minutes looking for his marker, which seems to have grown legs and walked off on its own.

A throat clears above him when he’s crouched down checking the overflow shelves under the register for the third time unsuccessfully, and admitting defeat, he straightens up.

Mountain Man is in front of him. 

“Hey,” he says, instead of welcome to Argent Books like he’s supposed to. “Whatcha havin’?”

“Medium vanilla latte, oatmilk, please,” Mountain Man says. He hands over cash, much to Stiles’ continuing dismay, because it would so much easier to get his name from a card, but doesn’t leave when Stiles calls the order to Kira and slides a cup along the counter. He just stands there, look of discomfort on his face, until he says, “Did you really like that book?”

Stiles raises an eyebrow.

“The, uh—Red, White, and Royal Blue,” Mountain Man says. “Did you really like it?”

“Yeah,” he says, and then, “well, no, it’s not really my thing, but everyone else liked it. I haven’t actually read it, I started the first chapter but I wasn’t in the mood for any kind of coming of age story and the romance—maybe if it were like, a gay detective novel, that shit would be cool. Or sci-fi—have you read This is How You Lose the Time War? That was good.”

He’s about ready to fling himself into the dumpster out back when Kira appears at his side, handing the cup over with a grin and Mountain Man, clearly sensing an opportunity to get away from Stiles, thanks them and walks away.

“Why don’t you go take inventory in the back until you don’t look like a tomato,” Kira says kindly, patting his flaming cheek, and he doesn’t need to be told twice.

The afternoon picks up and although Stiles doesn’t forget about the awkward encounter, he at least puts it out of his mind—until his phone buzzes in his apron pocket and he picks it up, expecting a text from Scott or his Dad, and promptly drops it straight onto the floor.

“Oh,” Kira says, peering around his shoulder at the picture of This is How You Lose the Time War laying on a couch, folded flannel blanket underneath. “Did I tell you I gave Mountain Man your number? I wrote it on the cup—you were never going to get around to it!” she says, whacking his arm. “And I’ll take your gratitude any day now, he’s clearly interested in talking to you, though sometimes I can’t imagine why.”

He only spends a minute hyperventilating before leaving the cafe area, snatching a familiar pink book off a display table, and taking a picture in return. Thought I’d give this another try, he writes under it, and follows it up with maybe we could meet up for coffee and talk about them.

He presses send before he can think about it, and breaks into a grin when the reply comes back quickly.

1) I am tiny. Really, really short. Think shorter and then think again. Once I shrink with age my girlfriend gleefully informs me I will be legally able to be classified as a dwarf. BUT I also have a very big legs and huge shoulders which means I wear oversized everything, because nothing that fits my waist or height actually fits me. Ever. So I embrace the oversized look with big boots and big jumpers.

2) I am a huge fantasy fan, specifically Tolkien, but my current favourite genre of books aside from a lot of wuxia that I have been reading is the new weird. Those monsters knitting across the sky are really...wow. I'm interested in how manipulating sentence structure can be used to create a sense of unease and wrongness: so putting an adverb in a place where it wouldn't otherwise be, ordering adjectives unnaturally, pairing two words together that really don't work but that you don't notice until you go back and check, unsure...there's a lot of space between 'grammatically incorrect' and 'natural' and I love books that deliberately manipulate that space. Similarly the use of physical landscape etc that is just...wrong.

3) I'm an introvert with very extroverted hobbies: I love to be looked at, and I love to dance! My dream is to learn circus or burlesque. I am constantly bobbing around and at parties will be the first person to get up completely sober and dance with abandon on a table. I'm an adrenaline junkie. I love high spaces and stupid risks and I am very childish and impulsive at times. I love cliff-climbing and balancing on thin railings and hanging off things. I love being the centre of attention and am a very good public speaker and performer, but hate actual contact with people, and have the social grace of a walrus: let me bow and wink and immediately go home please. And then after that I will stare at the wall with drained social battery for like two days.

4) I went through a period of three-four years of mental health problems. I'm doing a lot better now, and am naturally very optimistic when not under The Big Sad, and want to say that there is another side to this. I still have a disaster life, but it's more of a WHELP ANOTHER MISSED APPOINTMENT AAHSFJHAKFHJA HILARIOUS OH GOD than not wanting to leave bed. Things will change. I never thought it would get better, I genuinely thought it would be like this forever, but it has. And especially for people struggling with things that don't get talked about much in mental health circles like dissociation or derealisation, you're not a freak, and things will likely change.

5) I don't talk about this enough, but the love of my life - what got me through my teenage years - was German. I love the German language so much. I'm no longer actively learning it and my active abilities have decreased, but I just want some love for this language in the langblr community ok...

Blood Poison   (part 2)

Part 1

Summary: Getting injured is never a welcome prospect, especially not on the Isle of the Lost where there is a high chance of infection. Uma will go to great lengths to save her first mate and discovers a use for her magic along the way.

Warning: Contains details of an injury, really mild and not graphic, but still be warned if that’s not your thing. Also has a description of a panic attack, though I tried to make it a read between the lines kind of thing.

Uma was a flurry of blue hair in her mother’s kitchen, darting about searching the different cupboards for supplies that she needed. There was no doubt that Cook thought she was out of her mind – which she was, so that was fine.

All in all, she made quick work of gathering things and was back out the door in five minutes, rushing across the wharf hoping that she wouldn’t drop anything.

Stumbling back into Harry’s room she kneels down and lets what she carries spill out on the floor. Then CJ is at her side helping her to stand things up to stop them rolling away.

“Have you done this before?” she asks standing up a flask of sea water.

Uma shakes her head, “I have no idea what I’m doing. I’m just going with it.”

“Going with what, if you don’t know what you’re doing?” Harriet furrows her brow, watching her.

“Like I said, it’s all in my subconscious” Uma reminds her.

“But why now?” Harriet presses, sitting down on the edge of the bed.

Uma swallows thickly. “I can’t lose him” she doesn’t explain more than that. Mostly because she’s not sure if she can.

Harriet doesn’t push any further than that, already aware of the strength of the bond between her brother and his Captain. “CJ help me sit him up” she moves along, instructing her sister to join her as she takes the cup of tea off of the windowsill.

At her sister’s instruction CJ moves from Uma’s side, leaving her alone on the floor to begin mixing her ingredients together. She lets her subconscious take over as her hands go about tearing up leaves of witch hazel and crushing them with sprigs of thyme with a mortar and pestle. Into it she adds sea water from the flask with no mind for the quantity she needs before her hand tips the other way and she places the flask down.

“What are the healing properties of sea water?” CJ asks from the edge of the bed. Uma had no idea that she’d been watching her.

“Anti-inflammatory” Uma says as she caps the flask. “But I think it’s more so to channel my magic from the sea.”

“Hmm” CJ makes a hum of fascination, seeming excited in the proceedings.

“What else do you need?” Harriet says, her voice flat. Clearly not sharing the same excitement that CJ has.

“A clean bandage” Uma states.

“CJ” Harriet appoints to which her sister says she’s “on it” before scurrying out the door.

“Gods I hope this works” Uma sighs and hangs her head when she’s sure CJ is out of earshot.

Harriet sighs as well. “If not, it won’t be for a lack of effort” she looks at Uma, who can see sincere appreciation in her eyes. “And if it doesn’t…” Harriet swallows thickly, “there’s always amputation.”

Uma hadn’t been aware that she was that close to crying but she swipes a hand under eye as a tear falls from it. “It won’t come to that… it can’t come to that.”

“I mean, Da would love it” Harriet smiles ironically through her own tears. “Finally be proud of Harry for something.”

“He would hate it though” Uma raises.

“He would” Harriet nods before quickly wiping away her tears as they hear CJ’s feet pounding back down the hallway. “Find any?” she asks as her sister steps into the room, her voice surprisingly clear despite crying.

CJ wrinkles her face at her, looking down at the bandage in her hand. “Dumb question.”

Uma’s hands shake as she applies the formed paste to Harry’s arm. She’s used admiring the muscular structure of Harry’s arms as he lifts things and works around the ship but the arm resting on her lap doesn’t resemble what she knows. Underneath her hands his skin rages with fever and although it seems barbaric, she’s comforted by the warm of the skin against hers, knowing that his body is fighting the infection alongside her.

When she’s satisfied with the covering of paste, she holds out her hand for the bandage which Harriet gives to her. As she wraps the bandage around his arm, she begins reciting a language which she doesn’t know. Even though she speaks lowly the sound of her voice fills the room, blocking out the sound of waves rocking the ship beneath them.

As she speaks, she feels herself begin to sway in her chair, all her energy beginning to leave her body. She feels numb and though she doesn’t know it, Harriet places her hands on either side of her arms to steady her. Her eyes begin to fade in and out of focus before they close. With her eyes closed and her energy leaving her, she doesn’t remember finishing the spell.

When Uma’s consciousness returns to her, she only sees the blankness behind her eyes. She feels the softness of a mattress beneath her and the weight of a blanket lying over her. Opening her eyes, it takes her a few moments to realise where she is, finding the door of Harry’s room cracked open.

Stretching her legs out she finds that her feet move without obstruction and she knows that Harriet would have tucked her in – CJ would have forgotten to take her boots off. Though she also finds the bed empty, her feet not connecting into Harry who she had thought would be behind her.

Rolling over, she finds him missing but the other half of the bed still warm from where he had left it recently. Pushing herself up she brushes her hair out of her face and then reaches down to grab her boots from the floor before strapping them on.

The ship is quiet as she walks through the hallway towards the kitchen where she knows the rest of them will be, they always tend to hang out there because it is a place their father never goes. Stepping through the door she finds Harriet behind the bench and Harry at one of the stools with his back to her.

“How are ya, love?” Harriet spots her first, a motherly tone to her voice.

Still lacking energy Uma just smiles reassuringly at her before taking a seat next to Harry.

“How are you feeling?” she asks him, her voice sounding slightly faint.

“Can say we’ve both been better” he smiles at her.

“I didn’t almost die” Uma points out.

Harry hums questioningly, smirking at her. “Ettie wasn’t too sure about that one.”

“Gave me a right scare you did when you passed out” Harriet flashes her eyes at her.

Uma looks down at the bench sheepishly, she hadn’t meant for anyone to worry. Though before she can make some form of an apology Harriet speaks before her.

“Seeing as you’re up both up now, I need to get a few things done in the market. Uma you can stay the night here if you like” she offers, pushing herself back from where she had been leaning against the bench. “But you’re staying here” she commands Harry seriously, ruffling his hair just to annoy him.

He quickly scrambles to fix his hair, which doesn’t turn out too different, as Uma nods a goodbye to her as she walks out the door.
